True To Life': Master Paintings at The Herbert

Chunks of nature, utterly raw, thrown onto the canvas and pulsating with life,'is Emil Zola's statement about the Impressionists. It is above the door of a new exhibition, 'True To Life' at The Herbert, Coventry city Museum & Art Gallery, Uk. 'True To Life' celebrates the evolving tradition of figurative painting with past and contemporary classics. If Zola's words were not enough, I was left in no doubt on entering this exhibition that I was in for a sensory visual feast. Major works by Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, David Bomberg, Robert Lenkiewicz, Nahem Shoa and Desmond Haughton, together with the New British Realists stop you in your tracks. In the present critical climate a show like this feels revolutionary.

Nas Being Arrested

Nas said he was smoking weed 2 hours before being pulled over. The officer arrested him for DUI, yet he looked like he passed all the sobriety tests.

This is exactly why we can't have peace now. NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE. Plain and simple. And they wonder why I'm militant and slightly withdrawn. Because at any moment the Revolution could pop off and I want to be mentally and physically prepared.

I'm glad they dismissed this case. It was plain ignorant racist bullshit.

Beautiful Characters by Mandy Sutcliffe

Here's an illustrator I'm drawing a lot of inspiration from for my my work. Mandy Sutcliffe is a great illustrator that creates delightfully beautiful prints & books featuring children and their friends.

Mady's style has a beautiful new age vintage feel to them, and the illustrations themselves are so charming that it’s hard not to reminisce about your own fond childhood memories. I mean, as a child who hasn’t invaded another country while captaining a pirate ship and scurvy crew of only your best friend and his dog, or gone riding to the local shops on the back of a giant woolly mammoth?

Beautiful in their simplicity and charmingly elegant, you can find out more at belleandboo.com or visit Mandy’s Etsy shop here.

The Tenderloin Project

Growing up in San Francisco you get to witness some pretty fascinating and grueling things during your time here. Some good and some bad, some memorable and some not so much. But one thing you'll never forget about San Francisco, whether you're born and raised here (like myself) or just passing through, is the homeless problem we have. The visuals you can witness in a matter of seconds walking out of your front door can be enough to make you want to cry...or vomit depending on how strong of a stomach you have. Anyway, my homies over at Black Scale are in collaboration with The Tenderloin Project to try and make proceeds to give back to these struggling individuals and then some.

Shout out to Mega and Dae over at Black Scale by the way.

And 'They' Say Hip Hop Is Dead... Psst!!!

2 emcee's from my top ten list getting it in.

75 Bars Lyrics

I'm from the land of them straight razor face beard niggas
With hammers on their waist, yeah, waste rare niggas
And I race scared niggas, them snake head niggas
That take care of niggas who don't break bread with us
Niggas make dead niggas and hate black niggas
Brown niggas hide yellow niggas and them red niggas
No telling when the bullet coming, be prepared niggas
Cuz when it do it coming land, sea and air niggas
That's everywhere niggas, Am I the muthafucking legendary?
Yeah niggas, make it very clear niggas
Been looking at y'all in my rearview
Mirror niggas want to be a millionaire, I'm already there niggas
I'm the definiere nigga, a bear taking more than my share
Lookee here, yeah, I know it ain't fair nigga
Neither is a bar even with a hair trigger
Haystack, try and find a needle up in there nigga
Leave you up in there nigga, show me the puppet
That don't need a puppeteer nigga, shed another tear nigga
I'm in the field with a shield and a spear nigga
I'm in your girl with her heels in the air nigga
I am such a fair nigga, you in a battle telling
Me you not ready like you figured I'ma bear with you
I don't care nigga, you now listening to the sounds
Of the money making jam trillionaires nigga
Gentlemen of an extraordinary league
You never see me blowing on no ordinary weed
What I'm smoking ain't a product of no ordinary seed
Your boy is heavy treed, I'm feeling merry
As a Tyler Perry scene, that monetary gang green
We tried to launder the cash and never came clean
So now I'm in the story with all the cats before me
And smoke purgatory for doing the same thing
And them niggas ain't change, them niggas can't change
Their moms shake their heads saying it's such a dang shame
?? to the buck, did another dang plan
My stage and my government ain't the same name
I'm a rock star, love it that my wallet chain hang
I'm a modern day saint; I'm a modern day king
My definition I can finally explain
Cold smooth like that dud Sean Connery was playing
I just got to be the man, I'm the father figure and
When I spit it's something like a psychology exam
If you stand where I stood, you could probably understand
How that mic feeling like a million dollars in my hand
It's the silence of the lamb, go and cop another gram
And twist with your zanny, work your set, work it down
What's your net working plan? You better look alive
Cuz them niggas outside looking desperate again nigga
And the blunts and liquor killing our lungs and liver
The asthmatic drug addict I function with it
I put a rapper in a hole where the dust will sit
for spitting played out patterns that once was hitting
I got news for you all, let me show you how to ball
See the legendary fall? I ain't heard of that
Y'all niggas is off the wall like Aresnio Hall
I'ma put you right back where the dirt is at
450 fahrenheit on the thermostat
Somebody starving like a white girl ?? that
But she not a earner yet, she couldn't put in no work,
not earning that, the black microphone murder vet
I'm in a class of my own,
If I got beef with you, you the last one to know
I arrive on time, I'm never fashionable
You late, I'm already international-able
I done toured to Berlin, banged in Beijing
You never seen nothing can't say the same thing
Tell somebody Black Thought, yeah you know the name ring
So give him the game ring for bringing what them niggas can't bring
My hustle is long, my muscle is strong
My man put the paper in the duffle I'm gone
Y'all still a light year from the level I'm on
Just a pawn stepping right into the head of the storm
You been warned, I will blow y'all niggas and disintegrate
I'm a rebel, renegade must stay paid!!!

'Defaced Flag' Organizing for America Health Care Reform

Saber never ceases to amaze me.

By JONATHAN ALLEN

One of the 20 finalists in health care video contest run by Barack Obama’s campaign arm features a mural of an America flag splattered with health care graffiti until it’s covered completely by black paint.

In the video – which is accompanied by the sound of a heart monitor pumping and then flat-lining – words such as “pre-existing conditions,” “homeless” and “death panel” ultimately obliterate the flag, which reappears on screen seconds later with the words “Health Will Bring Our Country Back to Life” on the blue field where the 50 stars usually are.

According to the Organizing for American Web site, the 20 finalists in the “Health Reform Video Challenge” were chosen by a panel of “qualified” Democratic National Committee “employee judges.”

A contestant whose video didn’t make the final-20 cut complains that a video “defacing the flag” won’t do much to help President Barack Obama or the Democrats sell health care reform.

“They should never pick that,” said the contestant, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “It makes the Democrats look really, really bad.”

A spokesman for Organizing for America said the group was not prepared to provide immediate comment on the video, which, according to the OFA Web site, was produced by Daniel Lahoda and Saber.

According to the OFA Web site, the 20 finalists will be judged by the public and a panel of experts that includes DNC Chairman Tim Kaine, Obama campaign chief David Plouffe, Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), singer will.i.am and Hollywood stars Rosario Dawson and Dule Hill.

Britney Spears A Hoe???

I had to post this because it just goes to show how much people love celebrities even though they don't know them from a hole in the wall in Bangkok. Now is it true? I have no idea. You be the judge.

But in Mike's defense, I have to say, Britney's sister did get pregnant at 16 years old. Hmmm... kinda makes you think right.

Raekwon - House Of Flying Daggers

As always everything I post has something art related that I like about it. And this latest post isn't any different. I've been posting a ton of music post for a good reason. I'm currently working on my own music project so these posts are a result of my inspiration.

This new Wu-Tang music video is pretty dope. I love the raw animation of it. I've always been a fan of defined messy art. Meaning there are defined lines of what the artist is trying to portray but the sketch lines and color overlapping are still visible in the finished product.

J. Cole = A Breath of Fresh Air

This up and coming MC out of North Carolina is mad dope. Now that's a bold statement coming from me because as an MC myself I'm mad critical of other MC's work. So I only give praise when praise is due. Well today I ran across J. Cole's music profile somewhere online. I can't remember where exactly but thanks to that blog for putting me on this cat. I read several reply's about his mixtapes and he was being highly praised. So as always, before I start "hatin'", I did my research on son. And the conclusion I've come up with is that son is mad nice. I have no complaints thus far. So as far as I'm concerned he's on his JOB. He gets two thumbs up from me.

He has two mixtapes out right now for free download; The Come Up and The Warm Up which dropped about 2 months ago. Both of which you can listen to on Imeem.com before you decide to download. Which I highly recommend you do if you're Jonesin' for a breath of fresh air.

And shout out to BBGun for directing this dope music video. Keep doing yo thang kid!!!

Detroit rapper Baatin dead at 35

BY VALERIE J. NELSON

Los Angeles Times

Baatin, a rapper who co-founded the progressive hip-hop group Slum Village, was found dead Saturday in Detroit. He was 35.

Ty Townson, a family friend, confirmed Baatin's death to the Detroit Free Press. Details were not released.

Baatin, who left Slum Village around 2003, had said in interviews over the years that he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and struggled with emotional problems. He embarked on a solo career, but had recently rejoined the group.

Born Titus Glover in 1974, the Detroit native adopted the name "Baatin" in the 1990s to reflect a newfound spirituality. "Baatin" was "Islamic for 'hidden,'" he once said.

While in high school on Detroit's east side, he started rapping and formed what eventually would be called Slum Village with Jay Dee -- who died of complications from lupus in 2006.

At a nondescript storefront called the Hip-Hop Shop, the group honed its skills at open-mike nights along with a young Eminem.

Slum Village was "among the best" of the hip-hop artists to come out of Detroit, Soren Baker said in the Los Angeles Times in 2000.

"Where Eminem relies on lyrics full of violence and confrontation, the trio ... takes a more universal approach, (delivering) a balanced, soulful sound and attitude that separates Slum Village from rap's two dominant trends: the glossy glamorization of excess and the hard-core gangster sound," Baker said.

Slum Village's lauded major-label debut, 2000's "Fantastic, Vol. 2," was "widely decreed the torchbearer of progressive hip-hop," and the 2002 follow-up album, "Trinity," reaffirmed that position, reviewer Kris Ex wrote in The Times in 2002.

"Trinity" contained the group's first bona-fide radio hit, "Tainted." By then, innovative disc-jockey-producer Jay Dee largely had been replaced by lyricist Elzhi.

Slum Village shunned trends and injected spiritual and social commentary into its work.

"If people could open their minds," Baatin told The Times in 2000, "they could see a broader perspective of hip-hop instead of categorizing it as 95-beats-per-minute, loud snares and muffled samples. ... It could be anything."

Baatin is survived by a son, Michael Majesty Ellis, 9; a daughter, Aura Grace Glover, 1; his parents, Howard and Grace Glover; and a sister, Tina, all of Detroit, according to the Free Press.

Ratata Gun by Tomm Velthuis

Awesome RATATA gun from Dutch designer Tomm Velthuis. Built of 11 wooden pieces, this intriguing toy when put together form a real-life dimension machine gun.

From the designer's words:
Eleven pieces of wood in a wooden box. A blocks set, just a toy. Until we start to play with it. When we put pieces together, it becomes a full size machine gun. People should play more, really play more. With each other. Away from that computer, get outside! You don't play with a gun, yet it looks friendly, with its smooth edges and a pleasant light color. There's two emotions hidden inside that provide food for thought.

Elucid - Automatic Writing

Directed by Ali “Boombaye” Santana. I’ll let E Gutta describe it:

If I learned one thing from the ‘Automatic Writing’ video experience it would be that there are only two ingredients necessary to accomplish any goal; vision and determination. Somehow the universe throws you in the path of whatever else required for the rest of your journey. This project was a true labor of love and testament to our resourcefulness. What started as late night random idea tossing via instant message (oracles, drapetomania, solar eclipses?!?) quickly morphed into a 4 page video treatment. Shot intermittently during the early months of 2009, without a penny’s investment, Boombaye and I trooped through the streets and subways of New York City in true hip hop/guerrilla style shooting illegally on lo-fi equipment without a proper permit. Five months and a number of sleepless nights later, I’m ecstatic to present this piece to the world. Automatic Writing’s message of self reliance and empowerment resounds even more so with the accompanying imagery.’Close your eyes, it feels different here/ Sign of the times, almost in the clear/I see spaceships on Flatbush, calling me back home/ Resetting the clock to begin again’Cuing inspiration from my personal musical trinity of Sun Ra, George Clinton, and Afrika Bambaataa, ‘Automatic Writing’ serves as a statement to the building of a new world. A future world. A better world. The idea of midnight trains, chariots, and even spaceships carrying oppressed people away from their suffering are common themes in American Black music. As a people robbed of their past, now living in the present as aliens in a foreign land that constantly seeks to disparage their identity, we have no choice but to embrace the future and the promise it brings.

Seductive Espionage: The World of Yuki 7

About the book:
Fleet Street Scandal announces the release of their latest book: Seductive Espionage: The World of Yuki 7. Artist Kevin Dart invites you to discover his favorite movies featuring swinging 60’s spy girl, Yuki 7. Seductive, intelligent, and charming, Yuki romps through film after film, vanquishing villains while looking fabulous. Since these madcap movies exist only in his imagination, Kevin has brought Yuki’s world to life through a collection of original artwork, stories, and an animated trailer.

For their second book, Fleet Street brought together an all-star cast of artist friends to tell Yuki’s story. 14 artists render Yuki and her world in their own styles and mediums, filmmaker Stephane Coedel assembled Kevin’s film stills into an action packed trailer, and author Ada Cole imagines what the world said about Yuki 7 during her heyday. In true behind-the-scenes style, the book showcases international movie posters, props, production stills, magazine snippets and interviews, making-of stories, and film synopses.

With evocative names like A Kiss from Tokyo, Danger is a Female, Roman Rendezvous and To Catch a Temptress, these films will soon be among your favorites, too.

The book has a first edition run of 2,000 copies. 100 will be available as a Collector’s Edition with a slipcase, mini prints, and more. 72 pages, oversized soft cover. Also available is a Yuki 7 t-shirt featuring the French movie poster for A Kiss From Tokyo.

A Field Guide to Common North American Phobias

A Field Guide to Common North American Phobias by Julia Icenogle takes a comedic look at common phobias. These illustrations are nicely done. I'm going to have to get a copy of my own.

I personally suffered from the one below for most of my early childhood...

BELONEPHOBIA: Fear of needles

I know I wasn't the only child that suffered from this one. I know adults that are still afraid of needles. Of all people gangsta ass Snoop Dogg is one of them!!! I was so afraid of needles as a kid the doctor, nurses and my Mom had to hold me down in order to give me a shot. LOL

Interrobang Seatbelt Wallet

This wallet is pretty interesting. Made by a company called Interrobang, this wallet is made entirely of recycled seat belts. The wallet doesn't cost that much either. For 32 ducats and the price of shipping you can have your very own vegan alternative wallet LOL. So if you'd like to get your grubby hands on this wallet just click here.

I did a bit of research on the company and their products and it seems they make a whole assortment of goodies out of recycled seat belts. Mostly Laptop Armor & Purses but they all come in different styles and sizes. You can check out their whole line by clicking here.

"Art"chitecture part 1

Growing up as an artist you find a love for everything that has to do with design and creativity. With that being said I've always had a love for "Art"chitecture. When someone finds it within themselves to go beyond the norm of building an average everyday home and pushes the boundaries of one's living space... it's magic to my eyes. So when I stumbled across these homes on Archdaily.com... I damn near had an orgasm in my eyeballs.

Each house I chose represents me in some shape or fashion. From my introverted personality all the way to my Indiana Jones mind set. And the funny thing about that Indiana Jones metaphor is that the hole only gets deeper the more you get to know me. Which is probably why I don't have many "friends". LOL

Just click on any one of the images below to see the entire collection of photo's for that home.

Binimelis House / Polidura + Talhouk Arquitectos

Scandinave Les Bains Vieux / Saucier + Perrotte architectes

This house feels oddly familiar. It has a lair type feel to it doesn't it? Why do I get the feeling Batman lives in that house??? LOL

Hind House / John Pardey Architects

House 205 / H Arquitectes

House on lot 23 / Juan Esteban Correa

Outpost / OSKA Architects

House of Diffusion / FORM | Kouichi Kimura

There are sooooo many homes I want to put up right now but it's 5:15AM in the morning and quite frankly I want to blog something else at the moment. So I'll continue this another time.
